From the Greatest
of the Augsburg Dressages + Schools
Rugendas I, Georg Philipp (1666 Augsburg 1742). The Trotting. Besides further rich horse scenery a young horse ridden at the longe around the pillar and followed by another horseman. In the background farmers at work. Mezzotint. Inscribed: Georg Philipp Rugendas Pict. invent. del. fec. et exc. Aug. Vind. otherwise as below. 49 x 67.3 cm.
Teuscher 124 + ills.; Stillfried 361. – Leaf 7 of the 12leaved (or 3 à 4 leaves resp.) Horse Dressage T. 118-129. – Not in Nagler. – With subtext in Latin + German:
Succussu juvenis condiscit fune caballus
Ad metam gyris accelerare gradus.
Heroo Pompae gressu ne desit honori,
Nec cursu ad currum cespitet atque cadat.

So the long rope teaches the young horse trotting,
That it walks in run and draw as fast as firm,
And throws, when it shall help adorn the parade,
Both the head as the feet heroically into the height.
Deviations against Teuscher supposed as slips in quoting due to deadline pressure there:
In the first Latin line here “Succussu”, there “Successu”. Behind “gradus” of the second line here a “.”. In the second German line here “Das” and “u.” with top dash for “u.(nd)”, there “das” and unsolved “u.”.
With surrounding margins of 0.5-1.5 cm. – Smoothened creasing almost not noticeable from the front. Equally not a pintip-fine hole.
Extremely rare, the leaves of this set are missing, i. a., within the c. 27,600 lots of Weigel’s Art Stock Catalogue, parts I-XXVIII, 1838-1857, the Bibliotheca Hippologica I. H. Anderhub with rarities like Ridinger’s Riding School in imperial oblong dissolved in 1963, and the Sarasin Collection (1999). The copy here
after decades in the generous ambience on the wall of a connoisseur
now on the market again for the first time .
Who conceded the wonderful leaves of this set with their marvellous horses the place which already a hundred years ago Wilhelm Schmidt summing up in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie assigned to Rugendas:
“ Doubtless, set into better circumstances, e.g. living in the Netherlands about 1650, he would have become an artist who
would have surpassed all his horse and battle competitors . ”
